Skarstedt’s opening in Chelsea helps commemorate the gallery’s thirtieth anniversary. Founded in 1994, Skarstedt continues to maintain its flagship New York space at 20 East 79th Street, the former site of Paul Rosenberg & Co’s legendary dealership and home to Skarstedt since 2008; its London gallery at 8 Bennet Street, open since 2012; and its Paris gallery at 2 Avenue Matignon, open since 2021. The expansion also marks the gallery’s return to the neighborhood for the first time since 2017 and reinforces its commitment to the city that has shaped the gallery and its program since its opening. The additional exhibition space in New York presents a special opportunity for the gallery to expand upon its current exhibition programming, providing a complementary yet distinctive platform for the artists and estates the gallery represents.
The new Chelsea gallery will be housed at 547 West 25th Street, previously the home of Cheim & Read. Originally designed by architect Richard Gluckman and spanning 6,000 square feet, the new Skarstedt Chelsea will retain much of the original space’s design elements. Celebrating the old and the new, Skarstedt looks forward to deepening its commitment to the iconic artists that formed its very identity, while simultaneously pushing into the future and expanding its vision in this storied Manhattan building.
On view starting November 8th, the inaugural exhibition, titled DAY BY DAY, will be KAWS’s fifth with the gallery and follows a series of solo and two-person exhibitions at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Parrish Museum, Water Mill. It will present a series of new paintings highlighting recent developments in his working method and iconography, recontextualizing elements from art history and his own oeuvre, thereby inviting viewers to engage with a dynamic interplay of references.
