Andy Warhol

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Andy Warhol: Ladies and Gentlemen, this catalogue features full plate images and a historic essay by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

With an acute awareness of the modernizing and liberalizing world around him, Warhol invited cross-dressers to pose and dress while he photographed them with his Polaroid Big Shot camera. Representing some of his most interesting portraits, this series was made in the same process as the Hollywood starlets and socialites. 

In an essay published in 2001, Vincent Fremont states, “Most people took Andy’s quote about wanting to be a machine with minimal human contact with his painting literally. This was one of the provocative conceptual thoughts he tossed out to see how people would react.”
