Cristina BanBan: Mujeres

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Cristina BanBan: Mujeres at Skarstedt, New York, this catalogue includes full plate images, details, installation images, and a text by Evan Moffitt.

The exhibition marked BanBan’s debut with the gallery, and featured a suite of 15 new paintings, all titled Mujer or Mujeres. The women featured within these paintings do not meet the viewers gaze, instead standing resolute in their power. Sexy but not sexualized, existing on their own terms, themujeres in the exhibition transcend voyeurism, underscoring their authority while appearing at once personal and universal. Evolving out of her earlier work, the works in Mujeres hover in a moment devoid of time and place, frozen in classical poses that emphasis the powers of line and color. Featuring the faces of the artist and her friends, these paintings function like a diary as BanBan reflects on her daily life experiences and emotions.
