FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Albert Oehlen
November 10, 2001 – January 31, 2002
Skarstedt Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of Self Portraits by Albert Oehlen. This is Oehlen’s first solo exhibition at Skarstedt Fine Art and will consist of eight self-portraits that were painted from 1983 – 1984, including one self portrait made for the occasion of this exhibition.
In this body of work Oehlen balances figuration with abstraction to simultaneously question and reference the practice and history of art. Oehlen uses Picasso’s early neoclassical works, Velazques’ painterly qualities and de Chirico’s metaphysical explorations as a point of departure. Oehlen’s choice of the self as his subject matter was not to introduce a psychological element into his work, but to express his thoughts on painting as a medium using a decisive subject matter. By stripping the creation of a painting down to its basic rules, Oehlen diminishes the limitations of previous cultural, aesthetic and artistic obligations.
Born in Krefeld, Germany in 1954, Oehlen currently works in Cologne, Germany. He has exhibited world wide since 1981 and has had solo shows at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover (2000), the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1997), Kunsthalle Basel (1997), IVAM Centre de Carme, Valencia (1996), and the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (1994).
In collaboration with our exhibition, Luhring Augustine Gallery will exhibit new works by Oehlen. Luhring Augustine Gallery is located at 531 West 24th Street.
