FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CINDY SHERMAN
FAIRY TALES, 1985
MAY 2 - JULY 1, 2000
Skarstedt Fine Art is pleased to announce the exhibition of Cindy Sherman’s “Fairy Tales.” This exhibition will assemble the large scale photographs from 1985 inspired by the sublime darkness hidden inside childrens’ fables.
This exhibition represents a significant body of work for Sherman, in that they are the first photographs in which she began to use fake, plastic body parts. The “Fairy Tales” are also the first works that go beyond the contemporary stereotypes of women, previously explored in the Film Stills, Rear Screen Projections, Centerfolds and the Fashions. Chika Mori, a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, eloquently observed that with this series ‘She leaps over time and space, and for the first time, goes beyond the boundaries of male and female, human and beast.’ The “Fairy Tales” represent all the elements of Sherman’s earlier works, while also foreshadowing all the elements that would appear in future works.
Sherman has had extensive gallery and museum exhibitions since 1979. Sherman’s work was the subject of a retrospective organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1997 which traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Galerie Rudolphinum, Prague, Centro Cultural de Belem Exhibition Centre, Lisbon, capc Musee, Bordeaux, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and concluded at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto in January 2000.
