FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ROSEMARIE TROCKEL
KNITTED WORKS
NOVEMBER 6 - DECMEBER 4, 2004
Skarstedt Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of knitted works by Rosemarie Trockel.
Trockel began making knitted works in 1985 when knitting was relegated to an inferior status in art. She sought to answer two questions: first, what was so embarrassing to women about wool and knitting, was it the way that the material was handled or the material itself; furthermore, could a handicraft ever qualify as art outside of its reference to "women's art"? By using wool Trockel is able to answer these questions while simultaneously posing her own questions about the status of art making through her content.
The wool works are industrially produced with computer assistance to the specifications of the artist. The works typically contain a repetitive pattern of logos such as the playboy bunny, the hammer and sickle, the swastika, the plus-minus signs, and the wool mark. Each logo has a special significance of its own, but when repeated on the surface of the work the significance is automatically devalued. A new content has been created--one that is critical and reflective of its own message. Trockel demonstrates that the artwork is a product of it's own means; it is a "spectacle of a society based on copies". Yet Trockel maintains a necessary tension by likewise installing a value back into the work by reclaiming its context and therefore the picture's inevitability as a unique work of art.
Trockel has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum Ludwig, Wolfgang-Hahn-Preis (2004), Museum Moderner Kunst, Frankfurt (2003), Sammlung Goetz, Munich (2002), Dia Center for the Arts, NYC (2002), The Drawing Center, NYC (2001), De Pont Stichting, Tilburg (2001), Modern Museet, Stockholm (2001), Centre Pmpidou, Paris (2000), Ileana Tounta Contemporary Arts Center, Athens (2000), Kunstbauam Lenbachhaus, Munich (2000), Kunstbau, Munich (2000), Staatliches Museum for Kunst and Design, Nurembourf (2000).
