For Immediate Release:
Surrogate Portraits
January – February 2003
Skarstedt Fine Art is pleased to announce Surrogate Portraits, an exhibition including works by Matthew Barney, Louise Lawler, Sarah Lucas, Yasumasa Morimura, Albert Oehlen, Richard Prince, Thomas Ruff and Cindy Sherman. The art works in this exhibition are constructed representations of the self and of personifications of alter egos, and reflect the shifts of postmodern theory in art in the late 1970’s and 1980’s.
In the late 1970’s photography and conceptual art merged with the artist’s use of appropriation. Within this new context, commercial images could be used to explore illusions of representation. The photography genre was being used as a tool to question the concepts of ‘the original’ and ‘authorship,’ wherein the viewer’s gaze was an integral part of the artwork. This generation of artists in the 80’s and 90’s synthesized these realms of the image and representation to achieve a deconstructionalist conception of the self and society; the manipulated portrait lent itself to be an ideal vehicle. The art works deliberate the contemporary issues of stereotypes and representations, creating surrogates that question elements of cultural history and social commentary.
All of the artists in this exhibition have had extensive gallery and museum exhibitions. Upcoming exhibitions are “Matthew Barney: The CREMASTER Cycle,” Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, February 21 – June 11, 2003. “Thomas Ruff,” Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Serralves, Porto, Portugal, January 24 – April 20, 2003. “Louise Lawler,” Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany, March 2003; Gegenwart, Basel, Switzerland, October 2003. “Cindy Sherman,” Serpentine Gallery, London, England, June 2003.
