Skarstedt Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Selected Works by Thomas Schütte, which will open Thursday, September 30th and be on view through October 30th. This exhibition is comprised of sculptures, photographs and watercolors, from the 1980s through the mid 2000s. It aims to present Schütte’s diverse use of media as well as many of the ironies and criticisms of humanity he explores throughout his work including historical recollection, achievement and loss of power, and finally mortality.
On view in Gallery one is a culmination of sculptures and photographs created in 1994, all unanimously entitled United Enemies. The group of sculptures, which correspond to the photographs, consists of two small figures tied together on a piece of PVC pipe adorned with colorful cloth all protected by a glass dome. The counterpart to this series, the photographs, of which all ten are displayed, highlight the faces and emotive nature of the sculptures making us wonder whether they are dulling it out to the death or simply trying to get along.
Representing Schüttes more recent works, in gallery two, is a group of five sculptures from the series entitled Wicht (Imp) 1996. Here the cast bronze busts are displayed on steel bases at eye level. The faces are morphed and distorted expressing the shrewd and unpleasant nature of these people, while immortalizing them in a manner that was once reserved only for important leaders.
Thomas Schütte was born in 1954 in Oldenburg, Germany. He studied under Gerhard Richter and Fritz Schwegler at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, where he continues to live and work. Not only has he had numerous solo exhibitions, including a Retrospective at the Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain in early 2010, but he has participated in numerous international fairs like Documenta (X, IX, Kassel) and 2005’s Venice Biennale where he received The Golden Lion award.
